GREAT SCOTT!!

Hill Valley

While perusing moddb.com, I came across one of the dopest game mods that I’ve seen in a while. It’s a total conversion of GTA:Vice City that inserted a fully working Delorean Time Machine from the Back to the Future movies.

1.21 GIGAWATTS?!

In fact you could only get the 1985 version at first, and in order for it to actually travel back, you have to go to the junk yard in the north western corner of the map in order to pick up some plutonium. Of course after you hijack the radioactive material a VW Bus full of Libyans comes chasing after you! Don’t panic though, just flip on the time circuits and crank that sucker up to 88mph and you’ll be treated with a freakin’ sweet cinematic of the Delorean enveloping in blue light then vanishing in a ball of flame, leaving the signature two fire trails behind. The cherry is watching the Libyans crash in to the side of a nearby building, meeting an explosive end.

Outatime baby!

Meanwhile in the year 2015, three consecutive blasts usher in a frost covered Delorean. The car is temporarily disabled but after a few button presses it fires right back up. Now that you’re in the future you can further modify the Delorean to fly and allow the time circuits to run on garbage with the trusty Mr. Fusion generator.

Where we're going, we don't need roads!

All in all it was a pretty sweet mod. It’s not without it’s bugs though. Attempting to change the resolution will freeze the game, attempting to Alt-Tab out of the game will freeze the game, and exiting the game will, you guessed it, freeze the game. All of that is tolerable though considering the close attention to detail the developers payed to the car (the doors open gullwing style!) and the fact that the cars change depending on what time you’re in.

Personally I can’t wait until this mod is complete with a Hill Valley map and some actual story content. As is though, it’s a fun little tech demo and concept design on how sweet an actual GTA styled Back to the Future game would be.
