While I was walking the expo floor at GDC 2008 last week, I came across something truly fascinating.
Picture by Ethan Schur of TDVisor Corp.
This is the Emotiv EPOC headset. It allows you to control video games with your mind! Well, anything that’s been developed for it that is. It’s pretty rad, it’s able to read you emotions, facial expressions, and conscious thoughts. It also contains head tracking technology, so it knows when and how you move as well.
The demo that they had running at the show was really cool. The main goal was to manipulate various objects using your thoughts. It also allowed you to scare away little lightning bugs by snarling at them. It was incredibly responsive and felt really good. I was followed on to the booth by Ethan Schur from the TDVisor booth, and he wound up talking to Nam Do, CEO of Emotiv about possibly collaborating on future technology.
This is pretty exciting to think about. With TDVisor’s excellent stereoscopic goggles, and Emotiv’s unique interface, it just blows the mind thinking the potential things that could come out of such a teamup!
I was also thinking about the possibilities that the Emotive hardware could have with electronic music producers. I could only imagine the nastiness someone like Dave Tipper could come up with if he could create music straight though the dome.

This was one of the coolest things at GDC. It seems IPs such as Star Wars would benefit greatly with this. Imagine simulating “the force”. There are so many things you could do with it its mind boggling.
