When I attended the D3Publisher event last week in San Fransisco, I was able to get a hands on with Dark Sector’s multiplayer modes, more after the break. It was being shown by Steve Sinclair, project lead on Dark Sector. You may remember some of his previous works, Unreal Championship for the original Xbox to name one. He was a humble, yet excitable fellow with a pitch black sense of humor. When asked how he felt about Dark Sector getting banned in Australia, he replied, “Proudest moment of my life, I called my mom to tell her!”
Anyways, back to the demo.
Unlike most games, which usually offer up team deathmatch or capture the flag modes, this game brings forth two modes that actually capture the spirit of the singleplayer game. They’ll allow up to ten (10) players to wreak havoc on five different maps.
The two modes are titled Infection and Epidemic.
Infection is a tag style mode but with everyone trying to get the person that is “infected.” The infected will play as Hayden and have access to the glaive of doom (what I like to call it), all three evolutionary powers, and a Tekna 9mm. Also, depending on the level, Hayden will be able to use the three different elemental upgrades (ice, fire, and electricity) to the glaive. The ice one was Steve’s personal favorite. Everyone else plays as Troopers and can only kill Hayden, so they have the choice of working as a team, or going at it alone. Once a Trooper kills Hayden, a new round starts but with the Trooper that performed the kill as the new Hayden.
Points are scored when one of the Troopers stuns or performs a finishing move on Hayden, or when Hayden kills one of the troopers. Points are lost for self inflicted kills. The finisher animations are SAVAGE. I was blown away with how graphic and brutal they were. It was awesome.
Epidemic is a team based mode where each team has their own Hayden that they need to protect while trying to kill the one on the other team. The match ends when a Hayden is taken out and points are awarded for kills and assists and are taken away for suicides. All abilities and weapons from Infection are available in Epidemic.
Because Xbox Live is more robust in it’s online play options, it offers more in the area of match customization, however, the game did look slightly nicer running on PS3.
This game looks awesome, and plays great as well. I can’t wait to get my hands on it again.

I said this game was going to be great a long time ago. I am always right.
